10. He is therefore forgiven if late for a dinner party.
因此，如果他在晚宴上迟到，他是可以原谅的。
此处用到了省略状语从句。当从句主语和主句主语一致时，可以省略从句主语以及相应的be动词。
例子：
He is therefore forgiven if (he is) late for a dinner party. 因此，如果他在晚宴上迟到，他是可以原谅的。
Metals expand when (they are) heated and contract when (they are) cooled.
金属受热时膨胀，冷却时收缩。
Francis Preston Blair Jr., although (he was) born in Kentucky, lived and practiced in Missouri. Judges, however wise or eminent (they are), are human and can make mistakes.

He cut things fine by reaching the classroom only 20 seconds before the bell rang.
他在铃响前20秒就到了教室，掐时间掐的得很好

12. It is hard for energetic, quick-minded people to waste time, so they are often tempted to finish a job before setting out to keep an appointment.

Several times since, she has been tempted to ring him up.

13. If no accidents occur on the way, like punctured tyres, diversions of traffic, sudden descent of fog, they will be on time.
如果路上没有发生诸如爆胎、改道、突然降雾等事故，他们就会准时到达。
（1）a flat / burst / punctured tyre / tire爆胎、
（2）diversion n. (Br.E.) = detour (Am.E.) a different way that traffic is sent when the usual roads are closed （交通）改道
They turned back because of traffic diversions. 由于交通改道，他们掉头回去了。
（3）come down / descend 下雾
A dense fog came down / descended in the afternoon.
下午下起了浓雾。
 lift / clear / disperse 雾散
The fog had lifted / cleared / dispersed by late morning. 
（4）be a trail to sb. 令某人头疼讨厌
She was a trail to her parents when she was younger. 她年轻时很令父母的头疼。

14. The over-punctual can be as much a trial to others as the unpunctual. 对别人来说，过分守时和不守时一样是一种考验。
 as much as ... 和……一样；就等于……
That is as much as to say I am a liar.
那就等于说我是个骗子。
He is as much a bore as his father. 他和他父亲一样令人厌烦。
